Asheville Engage: Music video showcase, City Hall cafe, cash mobs and more - Asheville Citizen-Times Posted: 21 Apr 2012 09:19 PM PDT Celebrate Asheville moviemakers and musiciansASHEVILLE – Local moviemakers and musicians will come together at 6 p.m. May 9 at Cinebarre for the annual Music Video Asheville party, with a winner walking away with a $500 prize and studio time at Echo Mountain Studio. Music Video Asheville's mission is to network musicians and filmmakers. Music videos, which have been submitted, will be screened. Awards will be handed out at 9:30 p.m. Tickets cost $8 in advance and $10 at the door. They're on sale at Harvest Records, The One Stop, Orbitz DVD, The Honeypot and Cinebarre. Wanted: Entrepreneur to operate City Hall cafeASHEVILLE – The city of Asheville has issued a request for proposals seeking an experienced food service provider to lease and operate a cafe inside City Hall. The city is looking for someone to operate a cafe, canteen or sandwich shop in a 756-square-foot space that's been home to snack shops and sandwich shops in the past. Join a cash mobASHEVILLE – The Ca$hevillains Cash Mob group is preparing to help local businesses by organizing groups of people to come out, have fun and spend a little cash. The idea is to get a group of people to show up at an independently owned business at an assigned date and time. People who arrive are asked to spend up to $20 and have fun. Mob details will be announced on Twitter and Facebook a week before the mob date, so stay tuned. Check out the Ca$hevillains page on Facebook for details. High school students shine at robotics competitionASHEVILLE – Three local high school teams participated in the 2012 FIRST Robotics Competition at the Dorton Arena in Raleigh recently. (Page 2 of 3) Fifty-three teams competed during the three-day event, with each team playing at least 10 matches. This year's event, "Rebound Rumble," challenged robots to pick up basketballs and shoot them, climb over barriers and balance on giant seesaws. The three local teams that competed were Hendersonville, Asheville and Weaverville. The Weaverville team, dubbed the "RoboHawks," won an award for finishing in 23rd place, making it the highest-seeded "rookie" team at the event. Chamber Challenge returnsASHEVILLE – Team and individual registration is now open for the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce's sixth annual community wellness race, the Chamber Challenge 5K, sponsored by Mission Health Systems. The June 1 event is a fundraiser for the chamber that encourages wellness and team-building through friendly competition among businesses. The race is scheduled intentionally during business hours as a statement about the importance of wellness to the Asheville business community. Participants can form teams of four with colleagues or other businesses. Teams are encouraged to dress up in costume or wear a unified color in the spirit of fun competition. Individual runners, families and strollers are also welcome. Individual awards will be given to the top five male and female runners. The Chamber Challenge Cup will go to the overall first-place team. In addition to the run or walk challenge, participants will enjoy a costume contest, live music, beverages from Highland Brewing Co. and healthy snacks provided by Ingles. The chamber is offering free training sessions every Wednesday through May 23. Participating runners and walkers depart from the chamber at 36 Montford Ave. at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays. The program is designed to help participants begin and stick to a workout routine, set goals, avoid injury and ultimately run or walk the Chamber Challenge 5K. Have a bite and a sipASHEVILLE – The Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce has announced a new food and drink event called Asheville Bites and Sips, set for 6 p.m. May 17 at the Wilma M. Sherrill Center on UNC Asheville's campus. The event will showcase local food and drink from Asheville restaurants and breweries. "Asheville Bites and Sips puts a fresh spin on the chamber's annual culinary event," said chamber President and CEO Kit Cramer. "Rather than a sit-down affair, Asheville Bites and Sips will have a more casual and uniquely Asheville feel. We want people to come sample bites and sips from chamber members while connecting with one another and really enjoying a sense of community." Tickets are $40 for food and alcohol and can be purchased at www.ashevillechamber.org. The event is a fundraiser that supports chamber programming.
